Yellow stuff in flower bed?

I had mulch flower beds, but we liked pine needle better, so we covered it in pine needle a few months ago. Even when we just had mulch, we had this weird fungus-looking stuff come up randomly. At first, it's white powder, within hours it turns to yellow powder, thicker, and then it turns in to crusty whiteish yellow (looks like yeast rising). What in the world is this and what will kill it?

No it doesn't come from dog vomit, it's a naturally occurring slime mould (sounds lovely!!) See link below. And they don't recommend eating it, see 2nd link.
Reply:It is a type of "Mold" and it will infect your plants. It is coming from the moisture you have trapped beneath the pine straw in the Mulch. However, you can rake or scoop it all up and get rid of the majority of the mulch and then put your pine straw (not the same infected pine straw) back in your beds.

hope this helps,

a quick edit.....please pick me, I should get these points because I just read your other answers and although very well informed, my idea will indeed work and is also correct, and I am the ONLY one who spelled "MOLD" correct.

:-)
Reply:slime mold will NOT infect plants.... it's just there in the mulch.... no need to remove the old stuff... once the weather warms and dries the mulch there will be no more....

dog vomit fungus is , while not attractive at all, is harmless to the plants and soil.....

you might actually find some interesting stuff about it here...

Reply:I don't know what this stuff is but I have it too. I scooped mine up and trashed it. Seems like it grows very fast, like you say, yeast like. Maybe someone will tell us...
Reply:It's a natural slime mold.
