Lily stalks are being eaten from the bottom up, rapidly. They look like little yellow worms, 1/4 inch long, quite fat (well fed off my lilies!!) They haven't hit the buds yet, but leave no leaves, just this black almost tarry goop. How do I get rid of them? Will the lilies come back or are they gone for the season? Forever? Will this spread to other flowers?
Something is eating my lilies? Yellow wormlike, no leaves left, just black goop! How to rid it?
I am not sure what the worms are but Could you get alive sample to take to the local nursery ???? They may be able to help For now I would dust entire flower bed with Seven dust you can get it at Walmart about 10.00 a large bag . I am wondering if they are not some form of slug The seven dust kills several pests It would not hurt to try . If it is a form of slug they will eat leaves and wipe out other flowers .. good luck
Reply:Could it be aphids? The only insect I can think of except the red lilly beetle. Spray with Sevin..
Reply:They are probably just gone for the season....try going to your local nursery and ask for a type of product that gives the worms viruses or diseases and that way it won't kill the good bugs.
Reply:Your lillies should come back every year provided that these worms didn't eat the bulb in the ground. I have used "seven dust" for my lillies, begonias, pansies, and geraniums. It helps for a while. I can see my flowers beginning to fill out, but you need to pay attention and reapply when necessary. The "seven dust" is also safe around children and pets. That is a must around my home! You can buy the "seven dust" at any garden store.
Reply:Hello
I am not one hundred percent positive which type of worm has found your day lilies but I can tell you they are not slugs. Slugs are nocturnal and you would never see them actually eating the plant. If it is a worm you can go to a nursery and buy Bacillus Thuringiensis otherly known as BT which is a beneficial bacteria that will wipe out the infestation. If you want immediate results use anything contain Beta-Cyfluthrin, Malathion, or Carbaryl. I recommend the Beta-Cyfluthrin it's better for the environment yet very effective. Goodluck
